How to Choose a Broker for an Expert Advisor

The same Expert Advisor can behave differently on two brokers. Spreads, execution, symbols and account type all matter. Here is what to check before you open an account.

2 min read Stop 2 of 10 on the route

An Expert Advisor sends the same orders whichever broker it runs on, but the result is not the same: the spread it pays, how fast its orders are filled, even what the symbol is called differ from one broker to the next.

The checks, one by one

1. Regulation and where you live

Licensed, and accepting clients from your country. One name can hide several companies, each with its own regulator and terms.

2. The platform and its rules for EAs

MetaTrader 5 for every K3Bxn Expert Advisor (K3Bxn News Scalp also runs on MetaTrader 4), with automated trading allowed on your account type.

3. The symbols and their names

Gold is usually XAUUSD, sometimes XAUUSD.m or GOLD. An EA that trades many pairs needs all of them.

4. Spread and commission

Paid on every trade. Compare the typical spread at the hours the EA is active, and add the commission on raw-spread accounts.

5. Execution

How orders are filled when the market moves fast, and any minimum distance for stop orders. Most important for news and breakout strategies.

6. Account type

Hedging or netting: most retail EAs expect a hedging account. Check the leverage and the minimum deposit too.

Score your broker

Tick what your broker passes. It is kept on this device.

Score a broker on the seven checks before you open a live account. The last one, a few weeks on its demo, settles most questions.

7. Try the demo first

The check that settles the rest

Open a demo account with the broker and run the EA there for a few weeks. You see the real spreads, the server’s time zone and how orders are filled, at no cost.

Words you will meet

Hedging account

Can hold several positions on one symbol at the same time.

Netting account

Merges all the positions on a symbol into one.

Raw-spread account

A spread close to the market’s, with a commission per lot instead.

Symbol suffix

Letters a broker adds to a name, such as the .m in XAUUSD.m.
